This past weekend at Kyle's, Rob and I had the opportunity to playtest some Star Wars customizations Joel made to Full Thrust for use with fighter size ships (tie fighters, x-wings, etc.).
I chose to play the Empire and was given six tie fighters; Joel mentioned that he preferred that I play the Empire anyways as they were significantly more maneuverable (i.e. thrust 10 versus thrusts 6 and 8, for those who know the game) than the Rebel ships and my prior experience with Full Thrust would probably keep me from flying off the table. Rob played the part of the Rebel Scum and was given an x-wing, a y-wing, and a Millennium Falcon-like ship.
We started on opposite corners of the rectangular table and gunned the engines at each other. The first turn went relatively well for the Rebels. The x-wing took a couple minor hits but the three Rebel ships managed to completely destroy one of my tie fighters.
The second turn is where things got a little hairy. After writing down our orders and moving our ships, we discovered that we were playing with miniatures on octagonal stands instead of hexagonal. In other words, instead of the usual 30 degrees for each point of turning, it was actually 45 degrees. Unfortunately, we moved the ships back and forth a couple times before we figured out why our results were screwy.
After another couple turns I got a good handle on the change to turning and I managed to get my tie fighters right into the heart of the enemy and take out the x-wing. The problem, though, is that he managed to take out three more tie fighters that turn.
Other responsibilities were calling at that point, so we decided to call the battle for the Rebels. Joel then mentioned that I actually was outclassed to begin with, so I suppose I held my own fairly well.
In the end, I had a blast and I would absolutely love to take another bunch of tie fighters up against some x and y wings.
