Getting back into gaming (again)

I've been out of the game, so to speak, for a number of weeks now for various reasons. But, life is finally starting to lighten up once again and I plan on diving back into the hobby.

Some things I plan on doing (and writing about here):

* Putting together something for an upscaled game or three of [Car Wars][cw]
* Get more painting done on [my Tyranid army][nids]
* Start putting together a [Hordes of Chaos][HoC] force for [Warhammer Fantasy][whfb]

Inspired by [The Scorched Archive][tsa], I will be doing all of this as publicly as I can. I think the idea of building an army on a monthly budget is a great one (and I would probably get a reasonable amount of support for more controlled spending like that from my wife; I have a tendency to get a tad overboard sometimes).

Wish me luck! And follow along at home.

From [Make][make], I give you [Kardia Mechanicus][km]:

Am I the only person to look at this and immediately think of Warhammer 40k?

Kill Team: First Impressions

I played my first game of [Kill Team][kt] last sunday. We played the Assassinate scenario with my Genestealers trying to take out some special Imperial Guardsman dressed up as a Techpriest. All in all it was a refreshing change of pace from standard Warhammer 40k, especially for someone (like myself) that plays a horde army like Tyranids.

Star Wars Full Thrust Playtesting

This past weekend at [Kyle][]'s, [Rob][] and I had the opportunity to playtest some Star Wars customizations Joel made to [Full Thrust][] for use with fighter size ships (tie fighters, x-wings, etc.).

Finally started painting my Tyranids again

Recently, I finally decided to get off my rear end and start painting my Tyranid horde once again. Up until then, the only real paint the figures had seen was black primer, if that much, as you can see from the picture taken at the last game played at my house.

I started with my termagents. On top of the black primer, I added a hefty layer of drybrushed dark brown. After that, I painted the armor plates a nice red color and I even managed to get a drop of a phosphorescent green into their little eye sockets.

I am still a little unsure what to do with their weaponry though. I could keep the main body of the guns brown like the rest of the figure, but then it looks a little bare. I could also paint them red like the armor plates on the figures. I've also thought of drybrushing a little ivory-like color on them. I've had good luck before with that on top of brown, but I'm a little unsure how it would look with the overall figure. I've also thought about trying a color with both red and brown in it, like a maroon or burgundy. A glossy black has also been suggested to me, which would certainly fit in with the intergalactic cockroach theme I'm going for.
